A CAFE in Whitehaven has celebrated its first anniversary.

Howling Wolf is an artisan bakery and cafe located below The Beacon Museum on the harbourside.

Whitehaven's town crier Marc Goodwin came along to show support to a business that is thriving in such difficult times.

Carmina Ardelean, who runs the cafe alongside her colleague Ben, said: "It's been Ben's dream for a long time and he always wanted to own a cafe of his own.

"When we found out this space was available we had all these crazy ideas of what we could do here.

"We had to open this place and once we had some ideas people were excited and wanted a place like this in Whitehaven.

"It's been really challenging, especially in a place like Whitehaven where we're a bit different.

"We were anxious about opening something because we didn't know how it was going to be received, but it went well.

"Even when it's been hard, it's assuring to know that we'd rather have it busy than quiet."

Marc Goodwin, the town crier, added: "It's brilliant to see any business in town doing well and it's great to be here to celebrate the first anniversary.

"It must be so difficult for new businesses starting out, but the town needs them. We've got a beautiful town here and tourists spend just short of a billion pounds every year in Cumbria.

"Most of that is in the central lakes area, but we want a bigger slice of that.

"It's great to see food and drink businesses in Whitehaven thriving."
