A LIFE-SIZE alien figure making a rude gesture has caused a sensation after being placed in a town centre shop window.

The 4ft 7in hand-painted model which stands in the window of Haven Artisan on King Street in Whitehaven, is to go on sale for £500.

The unique hand-painted figure was 3D printed by Adrian Barrett, who owns the business with his wife, Lorraine, and took just over a month to make.

Lorraine said: “People's reactions have been brilliant. Kids love him and a lot of people have had their photo taken with him since we put him into the shop window.

“We just wanted to make something a little spectacular and to make people smile. We will be hopefully making smaller ones at a lower price.”

The alien made a surprise appearance at the Mini-Con event held at Whitehaven Civic Hall on Saturday and was well received by those who attended.

Lorraine said: “He was a huge hit with everyone, young and old. He even had his own wristband for the event. It was nice to see so many people laughing with him and wanting their picture taken with him.”

Chris Hayes, mayor of Whitehaven, said: “It’s a great bit of publicity. I think people will see the funny side. People in Whitehaven need to lighten up a little bit. I hope it doesn’t cause too much controversy. It’s a great talking point.”

Graham Roberts, who represents the Harras ward on Whitehaven Town Council, said: “I don’t know what to make of it. Some people will be disgusted. Some people will regard it as a joke. I’m glad it’s only one finger he’s put up.

“We are living in a rather politically correct society. Obviously, young people see something in it that I don’t. I was brought up in a different generation.”
