A POLICE officer is ‘immensely proud’ to have been selected to represent the Great Britain Police rugby league team in Australia.

James Motum, an officer with Cumbria Constabulary, will be part of the 23-strong squad hoping to beat their Australian counterparts later this month.

The 32-year-old from Workington has been selected as vice-captain of the touring squad and is looking forward to taking on the Aussies.

James said: “I’m very proud to be selected. I am the only member of the squad from Cumbria Police. I am proud of representing my local area and the constabulary I work for.

“I am born and raised in the town where I work and other than being at Uni I have always been here and always played sport in the local area. So to be chosen to go over the Australia with a representative side is really special.”

The tour, which is self-funded, was originally due to take place in 2020 but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

James said: “I think anyone who plays the game dreams of playing in Australia or taking on the Aussies. They are the best in terms of police rugby with a good few of their lads having NRL experience.

“But there's no better motivation than challenging yourself, taking on the best in their own back yard given the historic rivalry in any sport between Great Britain and Australia.

“I am immensely proud to have been chosen to be the vice-captain and can't wait to get stuck in.”

James, who plays for Distington ARLFC, has always played rugby and says it is a sport that has given him ‘so many positive experiences and memories’.

He said he loves taking to the field in the navy and red and is looking forward to playing Distington’s first season in the National Conference League this year too.

James has represented the British Police side for almost nine years now and has been involved in Challenge Cup games and other fixtures such as playing New South Wales Police as they toured Great Britain in September.

A JustGiving page set up to help fund James’ trip to Australia has raised £850 so far. He has also received support from local businesses and of course, Distington ARLFC.

James said: “For me, this will be an experience of a life time. A massive thank you to local businesses: K. Adams & Son, Alan Hunter Roofing, CM Scaffolding Solutions, Stewart Worthington Joinery and BW Plastering - just to name a few.

“Thank you to Distington - the club is amazing. They look after their own and I know I have their full support - and friends and family - the support has been fantastic.

“I'd like to thank my partner Debbie for supporting me looking after our young family whilst I am away.”
