A FUNDRAISING walk will be held this weekend to remember a popular young rugby player and a dedicated club stalwart – a year after their tragic deaths.

Family and friends will walk four and a half miles in memory of Logan Holgate, 18, a talented Hensingham ARLFC player and Peter Wren, a longtime supporter of the club.

The rugby community was left in shock when Logan passed away suddenly in his sleep at home in Whitehaven on January 11 last year. Peter, 50, died unexpectedly at home on December 18, 2022.

Loved-ones will walk from Distington ARLFC to Hensingham ARLFC on January 13 to raise money for a memorial bench, which will be placed at the Hensingham club, where Peter would stand to watch the games.

Simon Mattinson, who has organised the event, said: “We lost Peter last December and it’s coming up to a year since Logan died so we wanted to do something to remember them both.

“The Hensingham club has a huge following and we’ve linked Distington rugby club in as well.

“Logan was only 18 and his friends are only young lads. It’s been a lot for them to deal with but they’ve all pulled together and I’m proud of how they’ve done that.

“Everybody is still in bits. We’re hoping to do something each year around this time.”

Lisa Powe, Logan’s auntie, said: “The reason we are doing this is because it’s so close to the anniversary of both of their deaths. We are doing this walk in memory of both of them.

“I am all for doing it to gain something from an absolute tragedy. Anything we can do to raise funds and keep their memory going is one of my main aims going forward in life.

“I always knew Logan was popular but I feel overwhelmed at what an impact he had on so many people’s lives at only 18.

“This is one of many things we have done and for so many people to come out, time and time again, shows how much he meant to lots of different people.

“Logan’s brothers, Fletcher and Ellison, are only young themselves, and all their friends have come through it by being together and supporting each other. That is how the boys and myself have got through this – from the support of the rugby clubs and the community.

“Logan was a showman. He’ll be up there delighted that it’s still all about him.”

The walk will start at Distington ARLFC on January 13 at 12pm. A party will be held at Hensingham ARLFC afterwards.

Some of the money raised from the fundraiser will also go to Distington School Parent Teacher Association.
