The Salvation Army in Whitehaven celebrated 145 years of the charity.

The evening also celebrated the arrival of John Gowan in the town 76 years ago.

Gowan and his family were heavily involved with The Salvation Army all across the world and he also spent some time at the Whitehaven branch.

A spokesperson said: "This has been a brilliant weekend celebrating 145 years of The Salvation Army in Whitehaven.

"In recognition of the arrival of a young John Gowans 76 years ago when his parents were appointed as Corps Officers we shared an evening of music from the musicals of Gowans and Larsson.

"During the evening we had the privilege of speaking to commissioner Gisele Gowans.

"At the start of the evening, we shared a letter sent by general John Gowans in 2002 in which he shared memories of his time in Salvation Army Whitehaven Corps.

"Corps musical sections and soloists presented songs from each of the ten musicals from Take Over Bid to The Meeting.

"Sunday worship was led by divisional commander, major David Taylor. We were reminded that our gratitude to God should echo God's grace to us."
