THIS year's 'Christmas for All' project has kicked off once again on Mirehouse estate, bringing festive joy to those who might otherwise have missed out.

The charitable initiative is spearheaded by the local community centre chair and vice-chair, Carl Walmsley, and his wife Louise. The couple saw first hand how many people on the estate were struggling and decided to help where they could.

The project supplies toys for children as well as food or vouchers for families that might be feeling the pinch during this expensive  season.

The project, a longstanding fixture in Mirehouse's community calendar, has seen an influx of support already after only launching last week. Nuclear Waste Services has contributed a £4,000 donation, and residents have donated online vouchers.

An upswing in donations is anticipated, with companies and residents traditionally joining the venture as December rolls in.

Despite a challenging start to the project due to both organisers juggling full-time work right up until Christmas, the project is on track, thanks to newly recruited support.

This year, Tyce, the youngest son of Carl and Louise, has come forward to offer his help. Tasked with funding and record-keeping responsibilities, the youngster has already demonstrated how eager he is to help.

Carl said: "He's seen first hand how many people we have helped and how many would miss out if we didn't do the project so he's chipped in to make it happen.

"He fully understands it's confidential and for him to give up his spare time during the festive season to help out others is something we are extremely proud of."

Carl continued: "As tiring as the project can be during such a hectic time of year it's a great warm feeling waking up on Christmas morning knowing families on and around the estate will be opening gifts and having a full belly due to the project."

"We find out the kids' genders and ages for the toys and we buy locally where we can or go online if we can't and supply supermarket vouchers or we get the food and deliver to any elderly or vulnerable that ask us for help.

"I feel it's really important to help out during Christmas, especially during these real tough times everyone deserves that little bit of Christmas magic."

The project now accepts vouchers and cash donations that's recorded on a spreadsheet and all receipts/ invoices are available for the donors when requested. More information will be available on the #MirehouseMatters page soon.
