Next year Whitehaven Town Council is planning an event for D-Day.

The council is working alongside local businessman Gerard Richardson to bring a photo exhibition to the town.

The event is being put in place for people in the town to recognise the anniversary of D-Day, which was when Allied forces landed in Normandy in June 1944.

Mayor Chris Hayes said: "We are going to plant red, white, and blue flowers in St Nicholas' gardens and have lights on.

"I think it will be a great event and I hope everyone gets behind it."

Gerard Richardson said: "We're going to be doing an exhibition based around D-Day but also World War Two in general.

"We're looking for any photos from anyone who might have known serving soldiers and sailors, but also general photographs.

"There was an interesting photo published from around 1939 showing St Nicholas' Gardens.

"At the time part of the war effort was to in theory gather as much metal as possible to be used as armaments.

"But a lot of this was Winston Churchill's clever way of getting people involved in the war, even if you weren't a soldier.

"This made communities feel part of the war because they were giving up things like railings in the town centre.

"I would like to see if anyone in the area has photographs like this that we could use to add some colour to the exhibition.

"It'd also be good to see if there are any photos of fundraising campaigns.

"This is because people in Whitehaven took part in fundraisers in one instance they bought a Spitfire for the military and in another instance they paid money towards HMS Whitehaven.

"We'd also like to see what general life was like in Whitehaven during the war years, any pictures of the shopping areas in the early 1940s would be ideal."

The organisers are also putting a callout for any old newspapers from the era which could be added to the exhibition.
