CUMBERLAND Council’s recycling targets will be questioned at a meeting of the full council next week.
Councillor Roger Dobson (Corby and Hayton, Lib Dems) will ask councillor Denise Rollo (Harrington, Labour), the portfolio holder for sustainable, resilient and connected places, about plans to meet government targets by 2035.
In his question he says: “Household waste collection and recycling is an important service provided by the council. The latest comparative data on recycling rates was published in January 2022.
“The aggregated rate for our three predecessor sovereign councils was 37 per cent. This compares with the best local authority rate (Three Rivers) of 64 per cent and the government’s 2035 target of 65 per cent.
“When will the executive share its plans for reaching the government target and will these plans include collecting and recycling food waste as is the practice with about a third of local authorities?”
Tuesday’s public meeting is due to start at 1pm and will be held in the Cathedral Room of the Civic Centre in Carlisle.
