An art gallery in west Cumbria has announced their featured artist for June.

Lowes Court Gallery has named a Frizington-based artist Kevin Weaver as their featured artist this upcoming month.

Since COVID and a recent spinal operation Kevin’s work has radically changed. His new works at Lowes Court are still quite large in scale and expressively painted, mostly oils on canvas, but his subject matter has reverted largely to politically slanted work more in line with his journalistic background.

Figuring largely in this exhibition are a set of mosaic-like square paintings which are part of a project which Kevin terms ’This Fragile Earth’ based on different types of trees around the world and the wildlife that relies on them.

Mr Weaver said: "As global warming, pollution, population growth and felling of the forests continue to threaten our planet we stand on the brink of a mass extinction of the natural world including our own.

"We stand on the brink in our relationships with the land and nature both internationally and in the Lake District."

Recently Kevin has also begun in his art to dig beneath what he calls the tourist veneer of the lakes to contrast that with the post-industrial communities of West Cumbria, and a good example of that new work is included in the selection.

He added: "It might as well be a million miles away in terms of standard of living and mindset."

Also included are two paintings depicting well-known old Whitehaven scenes of Haig Pit and the Candlestick, and the gallery continues to stock Kevin’s landscape prints. The feature wall is on view until Saturday, June 24.

The Gallery (on Main Street, Egremont), also stocks a wide range of locally produced arts and crafts, paintings and photographs by other gallery artists, prints and cards, textiles, glassware, jewelry, and wood.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday 10 am until 1.30 pm.
