A community centre in West Cumbria is looking for more volunteers and support as it continues to grow.

Red Lonning Community Centre, in Whitehaven, reopened its doors again over the past couple of years.

It now offers a range of activities for locals to come and get involved with including a Muay Thai kickboxing class and bingo.

Allan Forster who helps to run the centre is working on putting more developments into the community centre to make it the best that it can be.

Inside is a large function room which can be used for a range of activities, there is also an outdoor space which includes a play area, an astroturf pitch, a gardening space and seating.

Mr Forster, the chairperson and signature on the building with the council, said: "I came up and wanted to turn it back to the community, since then we've had a number of events on.

"We've got craft club on a Monday, Bounce which is a trampoline exercise on a Monday and a Wednesday, we have the Whitehaven Operatic Society who are in about two or three times a week, we have kickboxing on a Tuesday, bingo on a Sunday and also the gardening club on a Sunday. Volunteers are more than welcome to come along to that.

"We have yoga and keep fit classes with Tina and besides that, we put on different events for things like Armed Forces Day, Christmas, things for the children and there'll be a list of activities in the summer for the kids.

"We're hoping to get more involved with Jericho Primary School because they are the school which is next to it."

Prior to this, Hillcrest Community Centre was originally called Rascals which was a nursery and that side of it seemed to go in with Jericho before we knew it Rascals had pulled out and that had to close and that's when I stepped in to get it.

Allan reminded people that it's a 'use it or lose it' situation in order to keep the centre open and he's hoping more people will come along, get involved with activities and volunteer.
