From Monday, May 1 to Sunday, May 7, locals can enjoy another trip down memory lane with an exhibition in St Nicholas Gardens Whitehaven.

The exhibition is sponsored by Whitehaven Town Council and co-organised with the deputy lieutenant for Cumbria, Gerard Richardson MBE and several of the vital images have been loaned for the event by the Whitehaven News.

Gerard Richardson said: "The News have been part and parcel of events in the town for the last 25 years since we started the Maritime Festivals so it's been great to continue that tradition with them supporting the current exhibition.

"The Whitehaven News has been recording everyday life for nearly 200 years so who better to partner with for a look back at Whitehaven and in particular royal visits to the town?

"They have always been as keen to help as they are to report on the events themselves and like I said at the start, their support is almost a tradition now, so much so that we've done a display board with clips from past newspapers going back to the 1920s.

"I should also thank Cumbria Records as well for their support in digging out the old newspapers."

Whitehaven mayor Charles Maudling said: "We are ever so grateful to the Whitehaven News for allowing us to use some of their archives for this exhibition which I think will be as popular as ever."

The Exhibition is in a Marquee in St Nicholas Gardens for the whole of Coronation week and is open from 10 am to 5 pm daily.

The Town Council is keen to hear from anyone prepared to sit in and man the exhibition during that week. Please contact either clerk@whitehavennews.co.uk or gerard@richardsonsoffice.net.

Once the Exhibition closes, the ‘Royal Visits’ part of it will be available to local schools to host for a week at a time. Schools are encouraged to inquire using the same emails as above.

In July, the plan is to loan out the entire collection of exhibition photos past to any Whitehaven town centre business with a street-facing window, and any shop/office wanting to take part is urged to email Gerard as soon as possible.
