This week children in the Whitehaven area enjoyed an arts exhibition and contest showcasing their wonderful work.

Children from Lowca Primary School and Hensingham Primary School took part in the event which was held at The Community Centre at Red Lonning in Hensingham.

The event was organised by Marissa Rule who says that she would like to host a similar event again in the future.

Whitehaven's town crier, Marc Goodwin, was also in attendance and the competition was judged by local artist Emma Hunt, who is well known around the area for her musical performances and arts exhibitions at the likes of Lowes Court Gallery and The Rum Story.

Ms Rule said: "I'm a very artistic person and wanted to encourage children to be creative and inspire them.

"Yes, there is a chance of winning a prize and a little medal but for me it's more about organising something to include all kids, to show that all art is exciting and can be an expression of their imagination and hopefully develop further artistic skill."

There were three different categories for the varying age groups with three winners coming first, second and third from each out of around fifty children that came off to show their artwork.

Emma Hunt was also delighted to be involved and sees art as integral part of young people's lives. She says that it is something that is very much needed for young people to have fun and develop.

Emma is currently working with several schools in the area to inspire the young people with her artistic and musical vision.

The event was held from 9.30am until 5pm with the prizes and medals handed out at 3pm.
