An amateur football club in west Cumbria have been left feeling disheartened after some of their property was vandalised.

Whitehaven AFC announced on social media that signs which direct traffic and assist in emergency situations have been severely damaged.

The club have said that they are appealing to anyone who knows something about this to come forward or they will be involving the police in the matter.

Luke Johnston, club chairman and director, said: "We seem to get people don't respect the fact that the majority of staff are volunteers.

"The road that the signs are on is the emergency access road to the Astro turf, so if someone collapses or has a seizure the ambulance drives right down onto the Astro.

"These signs stop the emergency access route to the Astro getting blocked.

"We have to use it when players require an ambulance, this does happen and enables the ambulance to drive straight onto the Astro and assist injured people.

"The amount of money needed to put the signs up will have cost the club over £100 and someone's decided over the weekend to damage them to a point beyond repair, so we're going to need to get some new ones.

"It's an absolute kick in the teeth that these important signs have been ripped off and vandalised.

"It's stupid and thoughtless if you ask me, especially when there’s CCTV on the Astro lighting column closest to the signs.

"Please come forward and pay for your damage or the information I have will be handed over to the police.

"In the past we've had sanitisation stands vandalised and padlocks stolen.

"I think it's important to emphasise that everyone's struggling at the moment, be that families, businesses or indeed football clubs.

"We're no different, all our bills skyrocketed. Everyone seems to think that because of the number of members that we've got that we have an endless supply of money but we really don't. We're with everyone else."
