Sixth Form students at St Bees School have been given a taste of what it is like to be the teacher as Year 6 students visited from St Bees Village School this week.

The independent secondary school pride themselves on character strengths such as leadership, creativity, communication, and teamwork as much as they do academic results and that was shown this week when students from Years 12 and 13 took on the challenge to plan, create and deliver lessons to a group of Year 6s from the local village school.

The lessons included different sports such as: volleyball, hockey, and badminton, much to the delight of the primary school teachers who commented on the students’ ability to help the younger children relax and enjoy themselves.

St Bees School teacher, Zoe Bettinson, said: "Personally, I was really proud of them; the atmosphere they created was exemplary, it really was a joy to watch.

“It is such a lovely feeling to give students the 'reins' and to give them the confidence to teach and encourage their younger peers.

“The Year 6 group left with more knowledge about badminton, volleyball and hockey and lots of smiles.”

The lesson was such a success that the Sixth Formers are hoping to get more involved with the village school students and their PE lessons next year, as well as involving them in International Languages Day which will be celebrated in the school.

St Bees School is an independent day and boarding school based in west Cumbria, UK.

With a history spanning over 430 years, they are open to students from ages 11-18, following a unique Fusion curriculum which merges the best of Western and Eastern educational practices.
