How much has Whitehaven changed over the decades? We took old photos from our archives and compared them to the Whitehaven high street we know now.

The first photo is of Catherine Street, move the slider to see an image of Catherine Street from 1970. In this picture you can see the 'Department of Employment and Productivity' which ceases to exist today, however you can still see the same arched doorway in the photo.

The second photo is of Lowther Street, move the slider to see an image of Christmas shoppers on Lowther Street in Whitehaven during December 1965. In the old photo, whilst you cannot read the signage of the shops you can still see the same architecture including the building TSB occupied until recently. There is the same clock still standing in both images as well.

The third photo is also of Lowther Street, move the slider to see an older image of what Lowther Street used to look like although the date is unknown. In the old photo, you can see that the buildings which we now know as HSBC, Your Move, Yellow Earl and Westminster Cafe all still look similar.

The next photo is of the Market Place, move the slider to see an older image of what the buidling in the Market Place used to look like. The old photo shows a very old mode of transport as a horse and carriage delivers a consignment for Number 43 Market Place.

The last image is of the corner between Lowther Street and Church Street, move the slider to see what the shops and buildings looked like. The older photo shows the Mayor's Sunday morning parade in 1965, there was a turn-out of more than 200. This photo shows several businesses such as Lakeland, J Craig Hairdressers and E McLaren which do not exist now in our town.
