This weekend Whitehaven RL will face off against Workington Town in a local derby game.

The Ike Southward Memorial Trophy will be held at The LEL Arena on Sunday, January 15 at 3pm.

Despite not being a league game, this is an important match for both teams due to the comptetition between both towns.

Whitehaven's head coach Jonty Gorley said: "It's always good to be going into a derby game and get the bragging rights back.

"Even though it's just part of the pre season it means a lot to both clubs and to me personally., so it'll be nice if come 5pm on Sunday the Ike Southward Trophy will be staying with us at The LEL Arena.

"To prepare us we've just been doing the typical pre season training, even though it hasn't been the best of them we're still preparing the best we can.

"I still think I'm a week or two behind where I should be regarding numbers and training. But these three matches that we've got coming up, starting with the Ike Southward Trophy game on Sunday, will just prepare us for the actual season.

"We didn't win the trophy last year, we played away at Workington Town and they beat us Workington scored pretty much during the last play to win.

"We'll hopefully get quite a few attending it's quite a big game for both towns and we got a really good crowd last year.

"Home and away both sets of fans supported it well last year. Even when the weather was awful there was a lot packed into The LEL Arena and the same when we played away.

"Unless we get drawn in the Challenge Cup together this is the only local derby game that we'll have this year as Workington are now in League 1."

Tickets for adults are £15, concessions are £10 and juniors are £5.
