PANTO fans have been saying hello, yellow brick road as Whitehaven Theatre Group put on its production of The Wizard of Oz.

They chose the classic tale as this year's Christmas time pantomime with around 2,000 people coming along to enjoy the show.

The story follows Dorothy and her dog Toto who are flown to the mystical land of Oz when a tornado hits her hometown of Kansas.

The pair follow the yellow brick road to meet the wizard and on the way are confronted by a whole host of characters like the scarecrow and tin man.

The show was held at The Solway Hall in Whitehaven and ran every night from Tuesday, December 6 until Sunday, December 11.

Shaun Donald, of Whitehaven Theatre Group said: "It went really well we received over two thousand people through the week, we sold out on three or four occassions and we came close to selling out on the rest of the dates.

"It was well received by everybody and the feedback that we received was superb. This was our Christmas pantomime for this year and we do one every year.

"It was a strange decision really because at Christmas time we normally tend to keep to the more traditional princess pantomimes like Cinderella or Rapunzel but this year we decided to do something a little bit different.

"We had a look at some scripts from a script writer called Alex Jackson who had wrote this script for The Wizard of Oz. We've used his scripts before and they are really good.

"When I read this one I felt that it was really modern and up to date and appealed to a wider range of audiences we felt.

"We decided to have a go at it and it turned out to be a really good choice in the end."

In the new year Whitehaven Theatre Group will begin planning for their annual musical in April but have not chosen which musical they will be doing yet.
