THE traditional annual service of the Blessing of the Plough has been combined with the Harvest Festival at a local church to support local food banks.

The Blessing of the Plough event aims at blessing the land and what it produced as well as celebrating the work of farmers. Traditionally, work on the land did not resume until after Plough Sunday and the Blessing.

It has been the practice of the church to donate the produce offered at the Harvest Festival to food banks. As usual, the Lamplugh Young Farmers' Club play a leading part in the service who carry the old plough into St. Michael's Church, Lamplugh.

Robin Megan, a member of St Michaels said: "Regrettably foodbanks are having to support more and more people."

"In the past it would have been the custom to have taken the food offerings to the poor or infirm of the Parish.

This year the service was held on October 23.
