MANY have noticed that the Hensingham bypass on the A595 has been continuously flooding now the rain has picked in in the Autumn months.

This road is often extremely busy as a key route to get to Whitehaven, Hensingham, Mirehouse, Egremont, St Bees and the Hospital, whilst there are other routes to these area, the road being closed slows many people down including ambulances.

November 7. a member of the Hensingham Community Group reported that she has previosuly filed three complaints about blocked drains on Egremont Road which have not been cleared. To add to matters, her husband cleared the road to prevent the gardens flooding.

On November 5, the road was closed again. Whilst there was also an accident that day at the beginning of the road, there was also a large puddle with a car stuck in it earlier in the day.

November 8, a Facebook user reported that Hensingham bypass was closed this morning, and all traffic was going through Egremont Road and Hensingham Square. The user described the volume of traffic as "carnage".

Cumbria County Council do not maintain this road and it is National Highways responsibility. Philip Cueto, National Highways Availability Manager, said:

“A team of subcontractors was sent to the site of the flooding issue and successfully cleared all of the standing water. They are now removing the final blockage from the system and we expect the road to be fully re-opened within the next hour.”

National Highways annouced that they will investing £10m on the A595 at Moresby and are holding events across Cumbria about the road. The work will include building the embankment, installing new drainage and improving biodiversity in the area. However, the Hensingham bypass is not included in these improvements.
