A WATER company claims everything is working as intended after a resident spotted 'sewage' in River Tyne.

A report to Northumbrian Water from a concerned resident has led to an examination of the river near Wylam.

After the investigation of the water, a spokesman for Northumbrian Water said: “Following the reports on social media, we have carried out checks on all of our assets in the area, including walking the full length of the stretch identified, and can confirm everything is operating as it should, and that there have been no discharges.

“As a result, we are confident that this is not in any way related to our network or operations.

“Should the customer still be concerned, we would suggest that he contacts the Environment Agency, which has a wider remit for issues relating to river water quality.”

This concern came from Graeme Peacock, who has lived along the River Tyne for 20 plus years. He was taking his usual walk on day earlier in the week and spotted something brown in the river.

He began to document it on Twitter and contacted Northumbria Water about it.

"I am not sure if it is sewage but at a first glance it looks and smells like it is," Graeme claims.

"I have watched how the wildlife reacted to it in the river and they will not go through it  and try to avoid it.

"It seems to have appeared over night for the last few days and is an on-going problem.

"I have lived along the river for 20 years it has never been like this before.

"There are a number of outlets along the river so someone must take repsonsibilty for it and clean it up."
