BARROW fans who made 'abhorrent' remarks about an opposition fan who was killed 'do not represent the town'.

Barrow AFC said a 'small number' of fans who made derogatory remarks about a Walsall fan when the West Midlands club visited Holker Street have been banned.

Ryan Harvey, 22, suffered a head injury in the altercation at the end of June.

Fans raised more than £8,000 towards his funeral through an online fundraiser.

Lancashire Police said two men, aged 32 and 36, had been charged with murder.

Barrow AFC said fans who made the comments had been identified via CCTV.

In a statement, Barrow AFC said: "The Club can today provide the following update, regarding the abhorrent remarks made by a small group of spectators during Tuesday night’s Sky Bet League Two fixture between Barrow and Walsall.

"The Club has moved swiftly with the local authorities to identify those involved, using our CCTV system, and today has issued several banning orders to spectators who were involved.

"We must take this opportunity to remind everybody that Barrow Association Football Club has a zero tolerance stance on anti-social behaviour, verbal/physical abuse and any other discriminatory remarks or acts."

Barrow AFC dedicated police officer Rickie Wallbank said on Twitter: "This type of incident has no place in the game and does not represent Barrow AFC as a club or a town."

Cumbria Police said they were aware of the incident but no crimes had been reported.

Lancashire Police said a post-mortem examination concluded Mr Harvey was killed because of blunt head trauma.

Mr Harvey's family said they were 'absolutely heartbroken' over his death.

"Our little Ryan was a bubbly lad who would do anything for anyone," they added in a statement.

Officers recently installed extra CCTV cameras around Holker Street to help monitor incidents.

The new cameras have been placed next to the ground to support policing on matchdays.

The cameras will be in place to secure the safety of match goers, according to police.

Cumbria Police said the CCTV cameras have been put in place in the area 'to support the policing response to football games and will allow us to monitor incidents'.
