FOR this weeks nostalgia, we looked through our archives at the year 1982 and what was goin on around Cumbria at that time.

Cumbria was as busy as ever in 1982 and we have collected together some great photos from the era to illustrate to you what life was like all those years ago.

Forty years ago some of the main headlines from national news stories were about the Falklands War after the Argentines landed on the South Georgia island.

Happier news came in June with the news of the birth of the Prince and Princess of Wales’ first son, William.

Meanwhile, 30,000 women held hands to form a human chain around the nine mile perimeter fence at Greenham Common to protest about the storing of Cruise missiles there.

In Cumbria, we had the Carlisle Parish review, which marked St Herbert’s golden jubilee celebrations. The Women’s Fellowship billed themselves as Shapes & Sizes and performed.

We also had plenty of sporting memories as some Harraby Secondary School pupils were chosen for the county volleyball under-15 team.

And, we cannot forget some farming memories from the year as ten-year-old Harry Ward of Brayton posed with one of the horses his family was selling in 82.

There are some football memories from the Carlisle v Wimbledon game on May 1st 1982 in which Carlisle won. The 1981/82 season was great for Carlisle United as they were promoted from Division Three to Division Two after finishing second. They also reached the third round of the FA Cup that season.
