A PHARMACY has had to make quick improvements after a damning report said it had not met safety standards.

Haydon Bridge Pharmacy on 5 Church Street was inspected by the General Pharmaceutical Council on May 26.

The pharmacy had to ensure they acted upon the suggested improvements by July 15.

The actions of the pharmacy have now been checked again and the GPC has verified that it has 'met standards'.

The council was satisfied the pharmacy staff had worked hard to be safer after inspection.

It was highlighted in the report that some areas in the business were 'untidy' and 'excessively cluttered'.

One worry the inspectors had about the clutter was the thought of the increase in the risk of mistakes and creating a significant tripping hazard.

It was also a worry to inspectors when staff members were dispensing medicines, as some staff did not follow necessary procedures in storing medicines.

Other improvements include a register starting to manage all its medicines and more team members to put orders away at any one time  - and from the downstairs dispensary.

Staff members are now also destroying any medication that is not in appropriate packaging.

This improvement was made after the report stated that Haydon Bridge Pharmacy did not receive or manage its medicines from wholesalers in the most appropriate way.

The pharmacy rectified the issue by creating a register to help identify out-of-date medicines.

Other improvements the inspectors were happy with were regular staff review procedures and training for date checking.
