THE National Trust has planned a plethora of fun activities for children and their families to enjoy this summer.

Throughout the summer holidays people are welcomed to enjoy the Trust's castles, lakeside places and historic homes around Cumbria.

The charity that helps protect and care for many of the UK’s best-loved places says there are lots of low-cost ways to enjoy them.

Jez Westgarth, head of the National Trust in Cumbria, said: "We care for over 500 different places across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Many of these are on people’s doorsteps, offering a full day of fun and adventure.

"And some, like Keswick’s Crow Park by Derwent Water - a large open green space - are free to enter with a summer programme of free live music and have a go sport.

"We want to help families make the most of the summer holiday."

Mr Westgarth said: "Thanks to funding from Sport England, families can play badminton in the most picturesque settings of Whitehaven.

"Near Loweswater and Crummock Water there are free sessions of volleyball, badminton and other sports and games between 10am and 3pm at Little Moss Wood field near Maggie’s Bridge on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 August.

"At Crummock Water there are beginner lake swimming session on July 19 and August 2 from 10am.

"Plus those looking to get active in the water can hire equipment or bring their own and have a go on a paddle board, kayak or rowboat at Fell Foot or join in with beginner sessions at Derwent Water."

A spokesperson added: "At Wordsworth House and Garden in Cockermouth. William's childhood home has a packed programme of children's activities. The Trust says drop in anytime from Saturday to Wednesday to take a look at a new exhibition, ‘Scree’, and create your own works of art based on Wordsworth’s favourite holiday spots in the Lakes."
