Thornhill Primary School has been awarded a national prestigious sports accolade for its commitment to the development of competition across the school and into the community.

The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

Thornhill Primary School has been awarded the Platinum Award, which was introduced in 2017 as the highest level of award, recognising high quality P.E., sports leadership, intra-school and inter-school competitions and sports club links.

Headteacher, Sophie McCabe, said: “We are absolutely thrilled! Schools need to achieve the Gold Award for a minimum of four consecutive years before even being able to apply for a Platinum Mark Award and the amount of work required for this is vast.

“We feel this achievement truly reflects Thornhill’s long-term, sustained commitment to developing a rich and rewarding experience of PE and sport for all our children.

“We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of school sport, including our young volunteers and sports leaders.

“As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.

“A huge thank you to all of the children who have given 100 per cent effort, to parents who have supported us and to Mrs Temple and all our staff who have provided so many sporting opportunities for our children to be involved in.”

Shay Tinnion, local school games organiser, said: ''An absolutely fantastic achievement for Thornhill. All credit to Jen Temple and all the team at Thornhill who have made it possible.

“Schools are assessed on their engagement within the School Games and their ability to impact the activity levels of their children. Thornhill are ever present at every initiative I have organised since I started in this role in March and this award is a direct reflection of this engagement.

“To achieve platinum, you first must achieve gold for four consecutive years so this level of engagement has been consistent, which has ensured hundreds of children have received high quality P.E, intra-school and inter-school competitions and sports leadership opportunities.

“I am sure Thornhill will continue to build upon this.''
