MORE than 300 visitors – young, old, and robotic – enjoyed The Beacon Museum’s Family Fun Day over the weekend.

Spot the Dog, a robotic dog developed by local firm Createc to help clean up the Sellafield site, was on hand to welcome people to the museum.

The robot also features inside the museum as part of the refurbished Sellafield Story exhibition, as people are challenged to find images of Spot throughout the exhibit.

Customer and visitor experience manager, Heather Holmes, said: "This updated exhibition is a fantastic addition to a day out at The Beacon Museum.

"I think our visitors are going to love the immersive nature of the film, and all the other interactive elements – it’s a great way to have fun and learn about the nuclear industry at the same time.

"There are some great old photographs from the community too, and many people will be delighted to learn the ever-popular blue block area still remains.

"I’d fully recommend heading to the Beacon to see what’s new."

The Sellafield Story also now includes an exclusive virtual tour of the nuclear site.

Head of corporate communications at Sellafield Ltd, Emma Law, said: "It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying the new exhibition.

"It isn’t possible to offer the public tours of Sellafield, but we now have the technology to be able to give people that access - albeit virtually – as part of what is a great day out at the Beacon Museum.”

As well as launching the new Sellafield Story exhibition, the Family Fun Day allowed visitors to experience a pirate activity zone and interactive exhibits including a virtual reality experience that takes you inside an old coal mine.

The Beacon Museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-16.30pm, and on Sundays from 11am-4pm.
