THIS week we thought we would take a look back at one of west Cumbria's most fascinating visitor centres and historical sites.

The Rum Story in Whitehaven is truly a fascinating place that informas members of the pulic and tourists about the rich history Whitehaven and the surrounding areas have.

The centre details the interesting rum trade which was a major feature of the sea side town some hundreds of years ago.

As well as a museum and attraction, the venue also offers a range of other activities including themed days and a dining and drinking venue available to rent out.

Here at the News & Star we thought that we would take a look back at how people in our community have enjoyed the The Rum Story over the years.

In this piece we have found some photos of fond memories over the years at The Rum Story, maybe some of these will spark thoughts of your own from when you have visited yourself.

We also thought that we'd take a bit of time to explain the history that it explores and how the centre operates.

The Rum Story tells the tale of the Jefferson family who were heavily involved in the towns rum trade a number of years ago.

Rather interestingly though, The Rum Story is set within the walls of the old warehouse where the Jefferson family operated their trade from.

Most of the trade of rum came from the West Indies and Carribean islands along with other foreign goods like spices and sugar.

A lot of which was brought into Whitehaven's harbour on boats giving the name to two of the piers on the marina, Lime Tongue and Sugar Tongue.

The centre has been open since the year 2000 and has welcomed a whole host of people through its doors.

It aims to educate those who visit on Whitehaven's fascinating history whilst also providing a fun and entertaining experience.
