The former mayor of Whitehaven is going the extra mile to raise money for cancer research – while being treated for the disease himself.

Chris Hayes is walking a total of 100 miles this month in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The Whitehaven Town councillor is currently undergoing chemotherapy, after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in October last year.

But he is not letting that stop his fundraising efforts and is determined to raise as much money as possible for the charity.

Cllr Hayes is walking over three miles a day around Whitehaven, with his friend, Simon Denwood.

“I’ve been going round the marina two and half times and then back to my flat,” he said.

“It’s a national thing I saw last month, and thought, ‘I’ll get involved in that.’ There’s hundreds of people doing it.

“With going through cancer myself, it’s something to give back.

“I’ve got another three rounds [of chemotherapy] to go. It’s tiring but I can get on with it. Nice and steady. We’re half way there.

“We started a week later than we should have done because I wasn’t well. But once you get into it, it’s nice. There’s plenty of people walking around the marina, chatting away.”
