NOSTALGIA this week will focus on The Beacon, which is one of Whitehaven's gems and provides a fun day out for all - with a side of history.

The Beacon opened in 1996 as a purpose-built museum to rehouse the collection previously held at Whitehaven Museum.

Owned and operated by Copeland Borough Council, there are over 30,000 artefacts from the collection which include archaeology, geology, social history and decorative art as well as the fine art collection.

As you can see from the 2006 picture, the Beacon needed a complete refurbishment.

In 2007, after the spruce up, the Beacon was equipped with new storage areas for its fine art collections, new interactive displays, and a new gallery for exhibitions. The Beacon is often used for school trips as some pictures show.

The Beacon cafe opened in 2008 and receives a great write up to this day!
