Lots of people are moved to open their wallets for a charity but not many go to the extent that would rival the efforts of an Egremont family.

Colin and Sharon Fox were on holiday in the Gambia about seven years ago.

"We were taken off the beaten track to see this school that was having a struggle to keep going so we decided to help."

They returned home and started raising funds for anything that would improve the lives of the children who were lucky enough to have some education.

The school was being run by a Dutch charity but was in sad need of repair

There was a negative impact from their help, however,.The more they helped, the more the unscrupulous owner of the building raised the rent.

"It was really getting ridiculous. In the end, the couple decided the best thing to do was built our own school. The head of the village showed us some land and we built the school."

The Siiboo school has three classrooms for 90 children. As well as ensuring there is the staff and facilities to educate these children, the charity set up by Sharon and Colin also ensures they get at least one good meal a day.

That could have been job done but the couple continue to fundraise at every opportunity. In fact Shareon once went truly above nd beyond when she dared to do a sponsored wingwalk.

The couple are always holding fundraising events and are about to launch a monthly car boot fair which they hope will give them a regular income.

The couple travel back to The Gambia as often as possible. If anything is to change ore added, they always get the support of the village's headman without whom nothing would happen.

Colin and Sharon are not millionaire benefactors.

Colin works in the Seascale Co-op and Sharon looks after children in care. What makes them extraordinary is the fact that they could not turn their back on a group of children they did not know.

The couple don't have a giving site: ’We prefer to earn the money instead of just asking for donations."

Just one more thing that makes this couple stand out from the crowd!

If readers are not able to just give, then please support events such as the car boot sale faire to help them to give a future and hope to children
