10 homes planned for Whitehaven site of former Royal British Legion Club

Copeland Borough Council has received an application for planning permission to build 10 dwellings comprised of four pairs of semi-detached units and two detached dwellings.

The application has been submitted for The Royal British Legion site on Hill Top Road, Whitehaven by Messrs Morton, Lister and Zanacchi.

A Statement submitted with the application by Summit Town Planning states: “Care has been taken to develop a contemporary style with complimentary materials. The site is wholly within the previously approved site and is considered to be acceptable in principle.”

They said that the vision is for a modern housing development designed to “lift the design aspirations within the area.”

Summit Town Planning said: “The dwellings have been designed with a contemporary feeling whilst retaining a common language with the adjacent dwelling typologies. Individuality is achieved through the incorporation of feature panels into the dwelling frontages.

“It is considered that the proposed development will make a positive contribution to the locality in terms of layout, scale and appearance.”

Prior works to demolish the old Royal British Legion Club and redevelop the site ready for housebuilding has paved the way for the new homes.

Three dwellings will be built on the eastern portion of land, set back from the footway to provide frontage parking.

The applicants have said that the proposed layout “respects the wider form of the area,” the scale and massing of the development has been carefully designed to reflect the surroundings.

Proposed dwellings are also designed to respect each other and the existing homes.

A coal mining search has been carried out to support the application and found no traces of mining in the vicinity.

The public can view and comment on all applications submitted to the council for approval.
