A TOWN councillor has resigned from her position, saying the authority she pushed to create is now a waste of taxpayer's money.

Carla Arrighi has stood down from Whitehaven Town Council, which she claims "just pays for two people's wages and flower beds in the town - nothing else".

In her resignation letter, which she has shared with The Whitehaven News, Cllr Arrighi says she has had to resign, due to the council no longer holding online meetings.

It is understood that Cllr Arrighi, who represents the Whitehaven South ward, is currently living in Glasgow.

In the letter, Cllr Arrighi goes on to say that it is "with absolute good feeling" that she is resigning from her position on the council.

She says: "Whitehaven Town Council is a group of people that are going no way and achieving nothing.

"The precept they get from the local community is absolutely wasted."

Cllr Arrighi told The Whitehaven News that the town council is a "self for self organisation".

Marlene Jewell, clerk and responsible financial officer for Whitehaven Town Council, said: "I have no comment to make. It will be reported at the town council on Thursday, as per normal procedure."

Carla Arrigi was a driving force behind the creation of Whitehaven Town Council in 2015 and served as a councillor before handing in her resignation for the first time in 2017 due to "disruptive and confrontational behaviour" at town council meetings.

She was then re-elected in May 2019 and served as deputy mayor until July 2020, when she stepped down from that position, quoting "a lack of openness and transparency" among her reasons for doing so.

However, she had continued in her role as councillor.
