A WHITEHAVEN councillor found himself in a bit of a jam at the weekend after loosing a bet on the rugby.

Workington Morrisons had a bit of a helping hand on the condiments isle on Saturday thanks to Copeland Councillor and Whitehaven rugby league fan Carl 'Wammo' Walmsley.

Carl better known as Wammo was so confident Whitehaven would beat rivals Workington Town in the Ike Southward Memorial Cup on January 15 he placed the bet on his social media pages that if Town were to win he would help push sales of jam in Workington Morrisons wearing his Whitehaven shirt as well as eating jam sandwiches for lunch throughout January.

Councillor Walmsley, said: "It was just a bit of banter between two rival sides being the young people champion down at Whitehaven rugby league I wanted to promote a healthy rivalry between the two neighbour clubs. I was 100% confident we where going to win that game with ease so when the jam scored in the last minute to win the game I just thought what have you done.

"Eating jam sarnies every single day for 2 weeks is bad enough I'm already struggling to keep them down but to stand in Workington in my Haven shirt trying to sell jam to jam eaters wasn't exactly one of my cleverest ideas but it's done and I came out of it unscathed in fact had a good crack and a laugh with some of them there alright in small doses I suppose."

The councillor hasn't stopped there he is so determined Haven will gain back bragging rights on Easter Sunday at the LEL Arena he has placed what he calls his final daft rugby bet- vowing to have the crest of the winning team tattoed to him.

Workington Morrisons Community Champion said : "In store today we have a Whitehaven Councillor who is a big Whitehaven Rugby fan! He is in store today promoting 'Jam' after a bet he lost with our Town Councillor Sean Melton.

"A bet he lost because Town beat Whitehaven at Rugby last Sunday.

"If your in store please say Hi to Councillor Wammo and tell him who the real Jam eaters are."
