LAST week saw the release of the fifth instalment of the Scream series.

The new release sees Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette return to Woodsboro, California, 25 years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town.

A new killer dons the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town's deadly past.

To commemorate the release, we asked what you think are the scariest films that have been made. In no particular order, the ten films are:

1) The Exorcist – The film sees Regan displaying bizarre behaviour after playing with a Ouija board. Her mother consults two priests who conclude that Regan is possessed by a demonic entity.

2) A Nightmare on Elm Street – The 1985 film focuses on a young girl who realises that she must stay awake to avoid the clawed Freddy Krueger who is butchering her friends one by one.

3) The Shining – The Stephen King adaptation was directed by Stanley Kubrick who was sensationally nominated in the ‘Worst Director’ category at the first ever Razzie Awards.

4) The Evil Dead – The 1983 film by Sam Raimi follows five friends who travel to a remote cabin in the woods where they play a tape with incantations. This releases the demons which possess them in succession until only one is left fighting for survival.

5) The Blair Witch Project – The 1999 classic sees three film students vanish after traveling to a forest to film a documentary on the local Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind.

6) Jaws – The 1975 Steven Spielberg movie focuses on a killer shark that unleashes chaos on Amity Island.

7) The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – The 1974 horror follows five friends who must escape from the clutches of the crazed Leatherface.

8) Alien – Ridley Scott’s 1979 picture focuses on an extra-terrestrial who has invaded the Nostromo, attacking its crew members.

9) Hereditary – The 2018 film observes a family haunted by a mysterious presence after the death of their grandmother.

10) Friday the 13th – Starring Kevin Bacon, the 1980 film sees Pamela Voorhees stalk and kill five friends.
