AN investigation has been launched after a South Lakes soldier was found dead at a military base.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has confirmed it is investigating the death of 19-year-old Gunner Jaysley-Louise Beck, from Ulverston, at a base on Salisbury Plain.

The MOD confirmed ‘with sadness’ the death at Larkhill last month.

In a statement, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: “It is with sadness that we can confirm the death of Gunner Jaysley-Louise Beck on December 15 at Larkhill.”

The MOD described the death as a ‘tragedy’ and offered their sympathies to Jaysley’s family, who run the Manor House pub at Oxen Park.

“As there are ongoing investigations, it would be inappropriate to comment further, but any death is a tragedy and our sympathies remain with the family and friends,” said the statement.

An inquest was opened and adjourned at Salisbury, national papers reported.

An inquest is an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding a death.

The purpose of the inquest is to find out who the deceased person was and how, when and where they died and to provide the details needed for their death to be registered.

We reached out to the family who said at this time they did not wish to speak.
