On Sunday the 16th January Whitehaven RLFC will face off against Workington for the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy.

Ike Southward is an iconic player who played for both clubs over the years and this cup match is held annually to commemorate his career.

The match will be held away at Workington Town's stadium, with fans from both sides welcome to join.

A spokesperson from Whitehaven RLFC said: "This Sunday Whitehaven make the short journey up the road to face Workington in the Ike Southward Memorial Trophy.

"The annual game returns to the pre season calendar after an enforced absence in 2021 due to the Covid pandemic.

"In memory of a true Cumbrian rugby league legend the trophy was first contested in 2006. It was donated by the Southward family in memory of Ike and his service to both clubs as player and coach. It has been contested on fourteen occasions since it’s introduction with Haven winning 8 and Town 6. Haven are the current holders following a 24-18 win at the LEL Arena in 2020.

"A lot of people will see this as a pre season run out. It is but played at an intensity that would be lacking from many similar games. Coaches of both clubs treat the game with the respect Ike deserves by limiting the substitutions to that of a normal game.

"It gives fans of both sides the opportunity to get a look at new signings and how their teams are shaping up. The gate is shared between the clubs. Get an early look at Havens 2022 Betfred Championship squad and get behind the chocolate, blue and gold."

The season for both Whitehaven RLFC and Workington Town is set to start in a matter of weeks and this match will show what both teams have to offer.
