The Times and Stars readers shared their thoughts on the recent claims by a former county MP that Prime Minister Boris Johnson is paying the same amount of council tax as someone in a Cumbrian council property.

Lord Campbell-Savours, a former MP for Workington, raised the issue in the House of Lords, asking to know what senior politicians were paying for their apartments on Downing Street.

And the answer he received? It was £1,655.12. Which, he said, was the same as an individual or family would pay to live in a council property, rented or bought, in Cumbria.

The answer came via Lord Greenhalgh, from the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, to which Lord Campbell-Savours said that he did not wish to respond further because the document “spoke for itself.”

He did provide statistics, however. He pointed to examples such as: Moorclose Road in Workington, where residents pay £1,580, Lawson Close in Copeland where residents pay £1,590, and Windybrow Avenue in Keswick, where the figure is £1,852.

And just to add to the controversy, this year Cumbria County Council announced that they wished to make a rise on council tax payments.

Here is what you had to say about the issue.

There was much praise for Lord Campbell-Savours. Joan McDowell described him as “One of the best M.P.s this constituency ever had. So dedicated, determined, & hard working to his own detriment. We owe him a great deal in this area.”

And Lilian Hogarth said: “[H]e helped a lot of communities during his time in office, and went over and beyond his duties, attended most local events and knocked on doors, and he’s still fighting for Cumbria. “

But some pointed out the ridiculousness of the issue he raised.

Kathleen Lomas said: “My band C in Brigham is far more than that and on minimum wage.”

Chris Campbell said: “Regressive tax that needs serious reform.”
