Carlisle United 1 Lincoln City 1 (United win 4-3 on penalties): Carlisle United edged past League One side Lincoln City on penalties to reach the third round of the Papa John's Trophy.
Lewis Montsma missed the decisive kick as the Blues won the shoot-out 4-3.
It followed a 1-1 draw in which Jack Armer had cancelled out Chris Maguire's goal.
And the outcome saw Carlisle progress into the last eight of the northern section of the controversial competition.
The tie was played in front of Brunton Park's fourth lowest crowd of all time - just 884 - as Keith Millen's side secured £20,000 in prize money.
Jon Mellish missed his spot-kick for United but Armer, Corey Whelan, Brad Young and Taylor Charters were all successful, as Maguire and Montsma missed for the Imps.
United boss Millen named a strong side at a rainswept Brunton Park, resisting the temptation to hand fringe players starts and making only three changes to Saturday's XI.
Mellish, able to play in the Trophy despite serving a three-match ban in other competitions, was recalled to the starting XI along with Zach Clough and Tristan Abrahams.
Young and Whelan dropped to the bench while Joe Riley was ruled out with injury.
Lincoln boss Michael Appleton, meanwhile, made five changes to the Imps side that started their league game against Accrington.
Lincoln forced the early play with Dan Nlundulu unable to convert a dangerous cross from the right.
Another probing cross from the visitors went unrewarded before Mark Howard saved a fierce low shot from Hakeeb Adelakun, and then impressed with a diving stop from Max Sanders.
United counter-attacked through Jordan Gibson, who fed Mellish to shoot but the midfielder couldn't steer it past keeper Josh Griffiths.
Clough then failed to beat the Lincoln No1 from a free-kick.
Lincoln had more of the play as United kept their shape well to restrict them, Lewis Fiorini and Adelakun unable to make the most of half-chances.
United then came close on the half-hour when a visiting defender deflected a corner against his own post, and the resulting set-piece broke for Callum Guy, whose rasping shot grazed the bar.
Fiorini failed to keep his shot down as Lincoln then broke under increasingly heavy rain late in the first half, but Appleton's side then did find a way through in the final seconds of the first half.
Adelakun was the architect with a run down the right and, after playing a one-two, he cut the ball back into space and Maguire arrived to rifle it high past Howard.
Millen brought on Young for Abrahams at the break, and United should have levelled eight minutes into the half when Cohen Bramall lost the ball and Gibson pounced, going around the keeper but failing to keep his finish on target.
Morgan Feeney managed to deflect a Sanders attempt wide as Lincoln tried to finish United off - and Howard then showed impressive reactions to touch a powerful Adelakun shot against the post.
Feeney was next to keep the Imps at bay by seeing off Fiorini at close range - and Carlisle then broke to level, when sub Manasse Mampala found Armer and the overlapping left-back sent an impressive low finish across Griffiths and into the bottom right corner.
Kelvin Mellor and Rod McDonald made timely clearances as Lincoln tried to respond, with Fiorini going close from the edge of the United box.
Maguire then fired over as the visitors chased a late winner but the tie went to penalties.
Mellish hit the bar and Maguire missed for Lincoln from the first attempts.
The next seven penalties all went in, Armer, Whelan, Young and Charters making no mistake for the Blues, Fiorini, Bishop and McGrandles netting for Lincoln.
Montsma then fired high over the bar to send United into the third round.
