Readers have bee responding to a story following the fears that a "creaking" A595 and rail network could block Copeland's new nuclear plans

'Creaking' roads and railways in West Cumbria could prove an obstacle to new nuclear plans, according to a Labour councillor but the Local Authority's portfolio holder said that these issues have been accounted for.

Copeland councillor and member of the Strategic Nuclear and Energy Board, Joseph Ghayouba is concerned that West Cumbria does not have the infrastructure to deliver on plans for clean energy projects.

Copeland is in the running for a STEP prototype nuclear fusion reactor as well as Small Modular Reactors from Rolls Royce - which will produce clean energy as the UK looks to reduce carbon emissions to net zero.

News ad Star reader David Hatton said: "Just more rhetoric from politicians trying to justify dumping more nuclear on West Cumbria.

"Continually promoting it as clean and green, when it just produces more nuclear waste that nobody has any idea how to deal with.

"We definitely need road and rail improvements, but lets not promote nuclear as the excuse.

"We now have Government backed projects all over the Country involving wind and hydrogen, yet here in West Cumbria we are having yet more extremely expensive nuclear foisted on us because we already have some.

"Not good enough.

"We must stop spinning the myth that Nuclear is the only answer."

Responding to David Hatton, Colin Wales said: "You are wrong to say that "nobody has any idea as to what to do with the waste".

"Geological Disposal is entirely possible and is progressing in Sweden, Finland and other nations.

"I have been at the coal face of the science of this for the past 3 decades and currently participate in three of the EU's EURAD work packages."
