POLICE are investigating an incident at the weekend in Whitehaven where one person was assaulted and received minor injuries.

The incident occurred at the taxi rank in the town centre on Sunday night.

Police said it happened at 3.55am on Sunday morning and the victim received cuts and bruises to the face.

Mayor of Whitehaven, Chris Hayes, commented: "I'm very sorry that this has happened and I wish the victim the very best.

"However, I do not feel that this is a common occurrence in Whitehaven anymore.

"Incidents like this are becoming more and more rare. I would imagine that we have seen this incident like others occurring as we come up to the festive period.

"More people will be going out and drinking and sadly on occasion this will happen. We used to see it a lot in the past but it is starting to occur less now. I don't think that Whitehaven is any worse than anywhere else for this sort of crime."

Mr Hayes said that stewards would be out of the streets and have an even stronger presence as Christmas time approached, with more people be enjoying the nightlife that Whitehaven has to offer.

Police would like anyone to contact PC 2611 Philip on 101 quoting log 68 of 14 November, 2021 if they have any information about the incident.
