WHITEHAVEN footballer Danny Hodgson has opened his eyes for the first time in weeks after being attacked in Perth earlier this month, it has been reported.

Danny's friend, Steve Burton, spoke to the BBC yesterday about the former Carlisle United star's progress.

He said: "The surgeons are pretty happy with his progress he is actually responding to commands, he is actually squeezing hands.

"He has opened his eyes which is amazing, his girlfriend who I spoke to earlier said he opened his eyes for about 20 minutes and is responding to commands which is slow but awesome progress."

The news will be welcome to many all over the world with stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Dean Henderson sending messages of support to the West Cumbrian.

But there is no community in the world quite like West Cumbria and messages of support and strength to Danny and his family have poured in from the community after this glimmer of hope was revealed.
