A LARGE investment for a Carlisle park has sparked debate amongst News & Star readers.

Carlisle City Council is asking people in the area what they would like to see happen at Hammond’s Pond in the city.

They have proposed a number of different ideas to help improve the space with almost half a million pounds available to help with the work.

About £450,000 has been provided to upgrade the park in four main areas: footpath improvements; landscaping and drainage improvements; recreational facilities improvements; and CCTV and security improvements.

Readers have been sharing their opinions on what should happen with the money.

Commenting on the News & Star Facebook page, Keith Cartwright said: "Hopefully the money is well spent and not wasted on someone’s folly start with the infrastructure first then build it up from there no point creating a wonderful play area if people struggle to get there safely."

Darren Mulholland said: "Seriously put some fish in it make it fishable like a lot of park lakes. Charge £10 a day make a killing."

Stu Watson also believed some invested should go towards the pond.

He said: "Get the water condition sorted get the boats back on the pond."

Debbie Leigh Fiddler added: "I wouldn’t mind a crossing on Lightfoot Drive for me kids to get across the road safe."

Susan Edgar reminisced about the park in the past: "Hope they bring it back to how it used to be."

Some were concerned about vandalism that had gone on in the park.

Mitch Glencross said: "Hopefully it will be maintained too. That pond has just been left to fester since it was last cleaned out. Play area ruined by vandals."

Tommy Macdonald said: "Well here's hoping that there's also effective CCTV installed and park patrols to stop the scummy little brain-dead vandals that have caused havoc in the past and plague it."
