Parts of the country are due to see heavy wind and rain as September in the UK looks to be “unsettled,” forecasters say.

The Met Office has put this down to an area of low pressure set to move in from Sunday, combined with the effects of “increased tropical storm activity” in the US.

But what does this look like in Cumbria?

According to the Met Office long forecast, the weather for the first half of September is nothing out of the ordinary.

For the period 4-13 September it says: “Most areas will see a continuation of dry weather, except for light rain or drizzle over windward coasts and hills, especially in eastern areas, with variable cloud and some spells of sunshine.”

Tropical storm activity

However, from 14-28 September is when we begin to see influence from tropical storm activity take its hit. According to Met Office, during this period there will be “uncertainty”,  however the drier weather looks like it could return for the end of the month, bringing with it temperatures slightly above average for this time of year.

Alex Burkill, a Met Office forecaster, told the PA news agency: “It’s fair to say the beginning of the month will be rather settled, with high pressure dominating.

“There will be drizzle and cloud in the east this week, but in the west certain regions will certainly hit the low 20s and see glimpses of sunshine here and there.

“However, this could perhaps be the last of the summery weather until the end of September, with a prolonged spell of unsettled conditions and low pressure from Sunday.”
