Over the weekend, public figures from the Copeland area gathered together to unveil a significant plaque to mark a day of remembrance.

Sunday the 15th August marked the 76th anniversary of Victory Over Japan (VJ) Day and the community of Whitehaven came together to mark the event in St. Nicholas’ Church gardens.

Reverend Robert Jackson, who held the commemorative service said: “We were delighted with the good turnout of people and the service went well and was marked in an appropriate way.”

“It’s not about celebrating our victory it’s about not making the mistakes of the past.”

Whitehaven Town Council granted £1000 to The Forgotten Soldiers Committee towards the purchase of the plaque.

Reverend Jackson said he'd like to thank all who were involved and the Lord Left Tenant for presenting the plaque.

Around eighty people attended the event that started at 1pm and an official service was held and then people visited the church to enjoy refreshments.

Whitehaven Town Council granted £1000 to The Forgotten Soldiers Committee towards the purchase of the plaque.

Councillor Allan Forster, who is also Copeland Armed Forces Champion, was involved and was very happy with the outcome.

Mr Forster said: "The event went very well and had a good turnout.

"Thank you to to our sponsors: Whitehaven Town Council, GMB Sellafield and Lord Egremont."

Events were also held in two local retirement homes organised by Alan Forster with food donated by Morrison's staff.

Local officials hope that similar events can be held in future to mark the important day which is now getting strong recognition.
