Wedding bells were chiming at a west Cumbrian music festival yesterday as one couple got engaged live on stage.

The Boof festival returned this weekend with highly-acclaimed Scottish band The Snuts performing in Whitehaven.

Mark Reed, of Harrington, decided to make the grand gesture by getting up on stage with girlfriend Emma Owens and getting down on one knee - all before their favourite band finished their set at the event.

Pints began to fly around the venue as an excited Emma said yes to the proposal.

Mark said: “We both knew it was coming for a while. We’ve been together five years, we’ve got a 14-month-old daughter, Ella Grace, and it had to be special when I was going to do it.

“When Emma started going back to work, as she would drive in the car The Snuts CD would play. She would play the song Top Deck and we have plans to go see them in Hull, but to have the opportunity to do it here [the Boof Festival], on stage, with The Snuts, I’m just so happy.”

Emma was equally as ecstatic as she was almost lost for words. She said: “I’m over the moon, so happy.

"It was amazing for him to propose then we just got to listen to our song together.”

The Harrington-based couple will now choose the perfect ring together and plan the big day.

The festival will continue today with The Sherlocks, The Lottery Winners, and hometown favourites Northern Threads and The Danny Dunnery Band among others performing right through the weekend.
