A group which aims to improve and maintain a popular local landmark is looking for people to get involved.

The Friends of Egremont Castle Group has recently reformed and needs help.

The group has held initial meetings and is now actively looking for more volunteers to help run the group.

They are looking for anyone who may have a spare few hours a month or those who can commit to being more actively involved.

In particular, the group is looking to fill the posts of vice-chair, treasurer and secretary.

They are also keen to hear from anyone with a business or finance background who can offer advice on how to run a profitable charity.

Colin Browne has been appointed the interim chair of the group until more members can be recruited and a formal Annual General Meeting held with elections to key posts.

The group has many plans for the castle including making more use of it as a community space for events and ensuring that the heritage and history remain for generations to come.

Egremont Castle is a Grade I listed building, originally built in 1092. The present castle was built between 1120 and 1135.

Further additions were made in the 13th century and it eventually fell into disuse.

Anyone interested in being part of the group can attend the next meeting on Monday, August 16, at 6pm in the upstairs room of Egremont Town Hall.
