A READER has praised Home Bargains after a new opening date for its newly-revamped store in Barrow was announced.

Bosses of the Walney Road superstore say customers can expect the shop to reopen its doors on August 14, and one reader has credited Home Bargains for the move.

They said: "Home Bargains is a well priced shop and they are in most towns now.

"They sell normal things at discounted prices, they must be doing something right as they are making money.

"I get all our toiletries there because the shops are clean, tidy, well stocked and cheaper than the supermarkets."

Colin O'Halloran said: "I would say it's the cheapest and best shop in town, but there isn't much competition."

Another reader commented: "Speaks volumes for how bad Barrow is, when the store expanding is Home Bargains."

"This is now to Barrow, what M&S is to Ulverston," one reader said.

The Home Bargains refurbishment is part of a development said to be worth £2 million.

It will see the shop nearly double in size as it takes over the former Poundstretcher store.

The two units are being joined together with a new entrance to Home Bargains to be built in place of the Poundstretcher store.

Barrow Council gave the work the green light last year.

A statement making up the plans submitted said: “This planning application specifically relates to the retail warehouse units at Walney Road Retail Park comprising Unit A (Poundstretcher), Unit B (Home Bargains) and Unit C (Argos). TJM (trading as Home Bargains) has recently acquired the freehold of the Retail Park.

“Following Poundstretcher’s well-publicised company voluntary agreement, the landlord will secure vacant possession of unit to facilitate an upsizing of the Home Bargains store."
