We’re looking back at the year 2003 this week. It was a warm summer with the highest-ever recorded temperature for the UK set in Faversham Kent, which remained a record until 2019.

In October the supersonic aircraft Concorde made its final commercial flight. Still on transport the M6 toll motorway opened giving the UK its first toll motorway. In Cumbria Lidl opened a supermarket in Carlisle and Workington’s Safeway store re-opened after a fire.

It wasn’t a particularly memorable year for number ones which included Westlife’s Mandy and Will Young’s Leave Right Now.

However, it was certainly a memorable year for English rugby union fans as England won the Rugby World Cup Final in Sydney as Jonny Wilkinson kicked a drop goal in the final minute of extra time to win.
