With the Olympics now underway over in Tokyo, many Cumbrians will already be enjoying the chance to cheer on competitors from our region and further afield in their quest for medals.

In today's gallery, we are looking back at times when victors were met with rapturous receptions in our regions following their sporting heroics at previous games.

We thought it would be fitting to look at not only Olympic heroes who you may have heard of but also those unsung names from our region who have made great contributions from helping to put the games together to those who helped bring the games home as torch bearers!

In a very inspirational gallery we meet some of the residents at Orchard Court sheltered housing in Whitehaven at the Olympic flower bed resident Evelyn Glaister worked so hard to create.

We also encounter The Zumba dancers from North Country Leisure entertain the crowd on Scotch Street with their Olympic themed routine, bringing festival spirit to our streets to mark the historic year when Britain hosted the Olympics for a third time.

We also see moments to remember such as Olympic torchbearer Shameem Arnold, who ran on the relay in Whitehaven, showing year 6 children from schoolchildren her torch.

We also meet unsung heroes of the games such as Vicky Hannah who worked at the Copeland Homes offices in Whitehaven, volunteered at the Olympics in 2012 and Gary McKee from Cleator Moor named Macmillian’s volunteer of the year 2012, their most prestigious award at the Olympic Park.

And in a very intriguing image, we see the Whitehaven Dixon General Manager and Gordon Osbaldestin, doing the Usian Bolt victory sign on the very escalator the Usain Bolt rose to fame, which found a new home right here in Cumbria following the home games.

For many of the people who were present at these various events, these images will undoubtedly bring back happy memories of brushes with sporting royalty as well as unsung Olympic heroes.
