Calls are being made for a pedestrian crossing to be put in place on a busy main road over fears someone will be killed again.

Graham Roberts, county councillor for Bransty, has written to Highways England asking for a crossing on the A595 near the Spar Pelican Service Station in Whitehaven.

Coun Roberts, who lives near the road, says traffic has increased over the last decade and he is worried a pedestrian will be knocked down and killed – for a second time.

He said: “I would say now with various infrastructure projects that have gone on and of course other factors, the traffic has increased.

“We’ve got to find some sort of way to get people from one side of the road to the other safely, particularly young people at the busy time in the morning who get the bus to Keswick School, old people who go out to get a morning paper and people who go out to post letters.

“The people I represent need access to these services.”

Coun Roberts said people are putting themselves at risk when attempting to cross the busy road.

“I have seen the traffic and it isn’t just at certain times of the day. It’s a constant stream of heavy traffic. People are frustrated and playing chicken across the road. It’s highly dangerous.

“I have stood for seven or eight minutes waiting for a break in the traffic. Some drivers will stop and let you over, but not many.

“A neighbour of ours was killed on that road. It has got worse since then. We have to find some sort of solution to it.

“I have been worried for the last 20 years that somebody could die again.”

Coun Roberts is also concerned about the speed of drivers on the road, which has a 40mph limit.

He recalled an occasion when he had crossed over to post a letter and he was almost hit by a car after a driver had mounted the pavement to pass a car that had stopped to turn off ahead.

“It’s frightening the speeds they do along there. A crossing would slow the traffic as well.

“The speed they do is ridiculous. It’s nothing like 40mph. It’s very dangerous.”

The proposed pedestrian crossing would be located away from the driveways to houses on the Loop Road.

It would be near the layby which Coun Roberts says is rarely used.
